빈칸의 위치가 겉보기에 거의 중간에 있는 경우 또는 문두의 주제문 다음에 위치한 빈칸은 대부분 부연설명문이다. 주제문의 일반적 진술을 빈칸에 들어갈 구체적 진술로 말을 바꿔 쓰기 한다.

주어가 ‘~ 한 사람’(One who)이므로 동사는 ‘~를 적용하다’는 타동사 applied가 맞다.
apply vt ~를 적용하다 vi 적용되다, 적합하다
apply 동사에 대해 자세한 공부를 해봅시다.
apply의 뜻을 사전에서 찾으면 타동사로 ‘쓰다, (열 등을) 가하다, (약 등을) 바르다, 전념하다’ 뜻과 자동사로 ‘신청하다, 적용되다’ 뜻이 있다. apply 동사가 가진 의미 가운데 to put something to[on/against] something이 있다. ‘~을 ~에 놓다[대다]’ 라는 뜻으로 이것을 이용해 다음의 예문을 해석해보자.
1. Apply paint to a wall. 벽에 페인트를 대다 (원시적 해석) → 벽에 페인트를 바르다 (진화적 해석)

목적어의 변화에 따라 동사의 의미가 조금씩 다를 뿐 본질적으로 큰 변화는 없다. 무작정 외우기 보다 의미이해에 초점을 두고 응용력을 길러야 하겠다.

주어와 동사(has altered) 사이에 수식부가 나왔다. 수식부는 형용사절(=관계대명사절)과 형용사구(=분사구)가 있다.
obtain 동사가 타동사이므로 만약 수식부 자리에 ‘능동’의 현재분사를 쓰면 obtaining 뒤에는 목적어가 나와야 한다. 하지만 목적어 없이 전치사 from이 보이므로 obtaining은 쓸 수 없다. 목적어가 없다는 것은 수동태를 의미하므로 과거분사 obtained가 맞다.

빈칸은 문두 주제문의 ‘일반적 진술’(general information)을 ‘구체적 진술’(specific information)로 말을 바꿔쓰기 하는 문제이다.
주제문의 ‘current understanding’ → ‘the contemporary understanding’으로 paraphrase함.
current(현재의, 통용되는) → contemporary(동시대의, 현재의)
빈칸의 핵심표현 ‘the contemporary understanding of the physical world’을 다음 문장에 ‘Understanding about the world of people’로 paraphrase함.
